In honor of my disgust with insanely bright and matchy, and today's affinity for all things green, here's a wedding I would actually have that incorporates those elements. This month Anthropologie [known for it's eclectic, expensive-but-less-than-couture artistry] launched a bridal line, and the wedding world waited in awe. I'll admit that there are some absolutely stunning pieces in it, and the idea alone of an Anthro gown sets me into a tizzy. Sadly, I'm slightly "whelmed." Maybe because it's their first line they didn't want to give it all away at once, but even with my seeming allegiance to the name, I wasn't as blown away as I planned to be. And by "planned to be" I mean that I might as well have marked their opening night on my calendar as dedicated to ohhing and ahhhing for hours, then figuring out a way to touch the things. I even had a dream one night that I found the warehouse for the dresses before their debut, and I actually went swimming in them -- not like I wore one to swim, yet rather swam through them, as if the fabric was water. Dreams....

However, you MUST check our their photography, styling and modeling. The site is gorgeous. Someone is awesome, whoever was in charge there, I mean. Also, there are some spectacular pieces. REALLY. Such as these:

Thinking Beyond Ourselves

My convictions for environmental concerns overwhelmingly outweigh my convictions about most other problems facing our planet. For this reason, I continually seek out as many ways as possible to bring sustainable methods into my life, my home and my work. Weddings and Interiors are becoming quite popular places for buzz words "eco-friendly" and therefore a crop (no pun intended) of products have surfaced, always seeming to cost more money and are terribly guilty of greenwashing.

For this reason, I was very pleasantly surprised to see a list of more practical and useful tips for greening a wedding in the most recent publication of Brides Of Oklahoma. We can thank Lindsay Gibson for putting this together, and you can check out the spread on her website. It is legit. I recommend every single one of those tips!

In our wedding, we adopted the philosophy that only what we could use after the wedding could be purchased. If I knew that I couldn't gift it, sell it or decorate with it, the guilt of purchasing something for only one day outweighed my desire to have it. Additionally, we made almost all of our DIY projects from materials I already had, such as the birdseed pouches. It was an idea that hit late at night when I was holding pretty fabric scraps that I had no plan for -- and it clicked!

Living Room Progress

Ah, yes. Rearranging a room is powerful. Completing it is even moreso, but I wouldn't know!

In the mean time, I did a crap ton of work last weekend in this space. Having Fridays off is a money in the bank, metaphorically, obviously.

The last you saw of the living room was then.

I started with this, and it bugged me mercilessly. While definitely the best angle for watching tv, which Brandon really enjoys, walking in to the back of the couch seemed really defunct to me. With such and open floor plan, it's a waste to close off that large doorway, especially since it's the first thing you see when you walk into the house.

I convinced myself that maybe it was just the really disproportionate [and all-the-while temporary] placement of the green chairs in there, so I tried this. BIG fail.

Then I resorted to a technique I'm not proud of -- "What did the last homeowners do in this room?" They had a curved sectional placed underneath the bay window with two chairs facing it. Beautiful layout, yes, but we knew it would really limit comfort when watching tv. I really liked this idea though because I knew it would allow me to bring the minimalist loveseat back in here, almost doubling the seating allowance. So, on the way to place the couch under the window, I unintentionally paused at the diagonal, and was instantly sold. BOOM.

Tv watching is very possible. There's more seating. The room flows more appropriately. There's not an awkward blank space under the window. It doesn't feel empty or overcrowded, either. Only down side? Brandon really doesn't like it! Eeeeek. He says it covers the entertainment center too much, and makes it look like an afterthought... :-(

Why yes, I realize that those frames don't have art in them yet, that the lamps aren't even (more on that soon), and that the dining room chairs are draped in fabric. My b.

Sam Lamb's Gnome Granary

Scoot on over to photographer Samantha Lamb's website to follow the progress of her granary renovation. It's quite fantastic, truly. Once an actual granary, it fell out of use, then into the hands of hoarders! She has absolutely worked like madness, and deserves for her first finished project in there to have turned out so well. Favorite. Library. Ever.

I love that this is all scrap wood that she's repurposed, and to showcase antiques, no less! I'm horrible at provoking the "primitive" vibe, but she is a genius. Her photos will lure you and mess with your dreams they're so beautiful. Her gnome lamp is now on sale at Urban Outfitters! Gnomes, of course, because that is the inspiration for her sweet little guest cottage.

More to come on adventures with Sam. We spent last weekend rummaging through scrap and stump piles (in Hobart, Oklahoma, no less) when not working in this sweet little granary. I might have trespassed??? Hopefully not, and ignorance is bliss.

Later on, we're thinking painted "rugs" on the floor, some fantastic thrifted and upcycled furniture, a wood-burning fireplace, and even more warmth!

Miniature Vision, Option A

As I mentioned here, I'd like to share some abbreviated versions of the Visions (say that three times fast) created for brides and families, so everyone can really be on the same page.

Option A was built from a candle. Yes, a candle. A bride brought the votive on page three and asked for her wedding design to mirror that style, but to be more formal and timeless.

I included two bridesmaid looks, as often those hues can't be determined before choosing a venue.... and because I really love coordinated ladies over matching ones.

This can't be your favorite yet, because there are still two more to come. Look for Option 2 in the morning!

Personality Board #16 + Visions of Awesome

In honor of my desire to be outside picnicing and taking hundreds of light-leaking photographs, I want to share this wedding I've dreamt up for no one in particular. Someone, please make this your wedding, and send me photos. I'll die satisfied.

Speaking of wedding design, let's talk about making plans in the beginning, and how much it helps to start with the end in mind! One of the first steps that I take with a couple planning their wedding is hashing out their vision. Sometimes that means they spill trillions of minute details that are incredibly personal, or in occasional other circumstances, they realize at this moment that they have no idea what they want. Some requests are as simple as "Please-no-pink-or-I'll-die" and "Classic." Others can throw an exciting curve ball, like Kristin&Dustin, who asked for Vintage Romance and Marvel Comics.

Whatever challenging wants they throw out, or fears they make known, I make it my job to make it work, and present the smathering of ideas in a cohesive form -- the "Vision." Once complete, this can range from 15-30 digital pages and a shopping + projects list. Think suggested gown and all accessories, attire to outfit your whole bridal party, ceremony and reception decorations, custom invitation suite design (upon request), and the like. As this is the rolling ball for the entire planning process, this is also an option I present to couples who can do most of their work but really desire help pulling things together and want some creative ideas.

Yes, I've shared Personality Boards on the site, but these are personality boards on steroids. I'd like to share three examples of hypothetical Visions with you, each posted separately. Option A is glamorous and elegant, undeniably feminine. Option B is bright, electrifying, and impossible to not smile when in attendance. Option C is handmade, adorable, and gives me the same feeling as when I watch "You've Got Mail."

Look for these little gems following this post, and please -- Chime in with your favorites, other styles you'd like to see examples of, and if you'd like help with assembling a vision for your wedding or home!

Fun Couples Getting Married

I've been working with a few couples this weekend on wedding plans, and can not tell you how excited I am. One is a couple that actually asked to start from scratch with the groom present, in order to fully incorporate his desires into the planning. This. Is. Awesome. I said it on Twitter and I'll say it again: I LOVE a couple that chooses personality over pressure to impress!

I also signed up officially to work with some good friends of mine, and let's just say this -- with engagement photos like these, you know they'll have an absolutely adorable wedding. Such sweet folks! Photo by Kris Boevers.

Update: Master Bedroom

The status of the Master Bedroom was shared a few days ago here, but after some rearranging, it feels like it's twice the size. There is still much to go (making a headboard, painting the dresser and nightstands, actually getting an extension cord so I can plug in my lamp), but it's feeling so cozy. I love the drama and finished look that hanging curtains higher than necessary creates. "High and wide" is the rule. You teach your room to lie when you hang curtains the correct way. ;-)

I've already been asked quite often why I went so neutral in this room, and I must be honest when I tell you that foregoing color is very new to me. The reason was this: for that bedroom, I really want a sanctuary, and a soothing one, at that. I'm overflowing other rooms with visual stimulation, so I want to walk into this calming space where my mind and my eyes can slow down. Fair enough?

A favorite wedding picture on the left and engagement on the right. Antique lamps were a gift from my aunt, but you've seen them before. Also, there's a lot of clutter on our nightstands. That's real life, folks!

Yes, those are embroidery hoops hung above the curtains...

And a detail I forgot to mention earlier that lacks completion: the friggin' paint. We ran out when doing the trim, so it looks like this in the corner behind where you walk in. Oh well.

This perfectly matched shade of olive (since when do I do that? Oh yes, again with the visual "rest" we're going for) toile will be our headboard cover.

Austin-ite Leah Duncan has hardcore hit my radar this month. Her style is modern whimsical and is so well done! Tea towels, pillow covers, prints and scarves show up in a mix of pastel-meets-southwestern vibe with dashes of mid-century minimalism. Such good juxtaposition in nearly every piece! A little special touch -- she cleverly names each piece and pens it on the bottom. Every item is a personal work of art. To think these came from hand drawings makes my brain spasm a bit.

Like I needed more reason to back her, but she prints on 100% organic fair trade cotton. Yeah girl.

We have a deep blue with lots of green in this room. FreshAire Choice calls it Joshua Tree, which is kinda fitting, since that U2 album came out the year Brandon was born. However, from the chip alone, he thought it was going to be purple. It's a chameleon color for sure, always changing with the light, but never into purple. Thank goodness.

Paint Party

Obviously, this is a peak at the colors we chose for our home. Brandon was unabashed in his hesitation with the colors, so perhaps we should say that I chose them and asked him to trust me???

Score of the century, too -- Home Depot's recent line of low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds, those stanky + toxic chemicals that are responsible for the "painter's high") is one of my favorite paints to ever use. FreshAire Choice has coverage that easily rivals a paint-and-primer-in-one and has earth tone color options. Win win! Their downfall: $40 a can. Though not insane, when you're painting two LARGE rooms, a master bedroom and a hallway, and need supplies, painting costs really begin to add up. BUT, happy surprise of January -- Home Depot discontinued and clearanced it!! I bought 7 cans of paint at $10 each, so $70 instead of $280. My joy was unspeakable, well, until I got home and Brandon asked why I went ahead and bought paint a week before we closed. He did a happy dance, too, which in his terms is like a satisfied shrug and an "Oh. Cool."

The very day we signed papers, some incredibly generous friends of ours from the college group came over. Holy hard workers. They're nuts.

I'm going to post the progress of one room at a time so the process makes sense. Check back for more rooms -- and tomorrow, I'll show current pictures! Woot!

Well, Crap

So this is what home ownership means: excellent choices and/or surprises that you're responsible for! Last night, in the wake if this horrific weather, all of our preparation still fell short, and we came home to a flooded garage floor. Tankless water heater has a cracked pipe.

We spent hours shoveling through a foot of snow in the front to locate the shut-off for the mains. Heck, we've been there two weeks today! Good weather all the while, why would we know where it is?

Luckily the city has an emergency water service, so at 2:30 am, that good Samaritan with a meter key arrived.

We have no water right now, and are in a long line to have that remedied. Perhaps I'll now have projects of updating and insulating the garage to share. It's seemingly a must.

Eco-Shopping: Worth it?

I have a hard time distinguishing between relentless "greenwashing" (the fraudulent act of claiming environmental friendliness just for the sake of sale trends) and knowing that a product truly is making a significant improvement over its chemical-laden counterpart. Cleaning supplies get me every time because I hate to knowingly fill the air with toxins when my very motivation to rid our space of dirt was for our family's safety. No? Also, food.

Areas that I have a harder time knowing the benefits of: clothing and furniture. It won't take me two seconds to admit that a very large part of my hesitation is price related. Is it possible that I'm talking about an unknown opportunity cost?? {Note: Microeconomics was just proved useful, and Professor Maryanne Meiners may have one redeeming quality for having successfully conveyed that concept. No charge for that vocab lesson.}

This brings me to a company I happened over today via Design*Sponge, where a spectacular yellow lacquered stool was featured. Upon reviewing the Branch Home store, I noticed the commitment to sustainability they share, and how all products comply with this standard in really cool ways. Had I physically entered the store, my hands would have been empty and my pocketbook pleasantly surprised with me. Living right is spendy, apparently. Some of my favorite pieces:

I don't have a friggin clue

Here's the middle bedroom. It has some janky 70's wallpaper over the janky original 1958 wallpaper, and numerous dime-size holes in the wall.

While it is currently great for storage, and will be a perfect office space, file it under the I-pledge-to-not-care-about-this-til-Spring spot. Whatever we do, it will be so much more efficient than the office in our last house.

And the reality, this one actually worsened as the others improved. We are working out of it and we make the living spaces more livable.

As of yesterday:

There was barely room to walk, but its state of seeming disorder has allowed us to organize the rest of the house as we go. Such a lucky space to have! As it is the third bedroom, the last homeowners actually said they just used it as a closet, and permanently set up an ironing board! What a good idea!

I spent a while clearing it out and preparing to organize yesterday. Isn't it silly to say you organized your stuff so that it could be organized later?? Anyhow, at present:

I'm fine with this for a while! Let's get real. It just isn't as necessary.

Symphony Showhouse Plans

This evening should bring the Undecorated Symphony Showhouse Preview Party, weather permitting. In honor of this possible, but unlikely (again with the weather) occasion, I thought I'd share my plans for the space!

The room is a bar and/or butler's pantry that's approximately 12' x 12'. While that's average for a bedroom or so in most of of homes, I'm quite confident that I'm responsible for the least amount of space in this renovation!

As you enter the estate, this room is Immediately to the right, as part of the east wing. The hallway presently is in this state:

Standing in the door of the butler's pantry, you face 1/3 of the formal living room:

Getting back to the bar itself:

Black marble floors, black granite counters, gold swan sink and faucet fixture, and really dated hunter green wallpaper.

From the view of the other rooms, you can see that the woodwork is a vital texture and architectural element throughout most of the home. For this reason, I'll be leaving it as it is. Otherwise, my changes look like this:

An explanation: The sink and faucet are an interesting touch that are too unique to ditch, though I probably would not have ever thought to choose them. Counters, granite and glass shelves also stay. The wallpaper I've chosen is vintage and the new hardware is recycled, hammered iron in a semigloss black. The recycled glass tile backsplash will be installed between the counter and shelving, as is usual. His collection of crystal will remain on display, and across the room from this view is a small bar area, above which will hang this large print from local photographer Samantha Lamb!! We will be more creative with the framing than shown here, so that'll be a surprise for you. I think this photo is crucial, along with the lighter colored walls, for opening up the space, almost as if there was a window in the room that opened up to the ocean. Above that photo will hang the shown chandelier that is neither too masculine nor feminine for this space. Lastly, I'll be arranging some fresh local blooms in an antique pitcher for the countertop.

I think the small dungeon of a room needs life and breath! I'll keep you posted with my attempts to resuscitate.

Because you asked: it's Miller Time!

Surely we'll come up with something better for our house than just using the street's name, but for now, yes -- I just referenced a tacky, over-referenced beer commercial.

Here are the images that were posted on the realty website that show the house as we first saw it. Our hearts welled up with joy when we saw those cedar beams! The front and back gardens are more than we can believe -- I giggled like a school girl at the sight of them. (Puts our 4' x 6' raised bed veggie garden from last year to absolute shame.)

And if you know me at all, you know I could explain these pictures to death, but I won't. Here's our house as the last owners had it.

The Opportunity: Oklahoma City's 2011 Symphony Showhouse Fundraiser for the Philharmonic League

The Structure: Numerous designers submit proposals for the chance to do one room in a glorious estate. If chosen, they work for the cause and are supplied with no materials, but rather work with vendors to have things donated. The home is worked on for a few months, beginning in February, by this network of the city's elite designers then tickets are sold for a month of home tours - May 2011. This year they expect around 10,000 visitors.

The Scary Part: They picked me.

New Beginnings [like the Andy Osenga song]

Last weekend, B and I choked back a few surprising tears and said goodbye to our first married house. It was a rental (that we loved for its location and undeniable quirkiness) but more importantly, it was home.

Yes, it was a sore thumb in Bethany, Oklahoma. So what?

What we haven't mentioned much about is the WHY of this move. Ahem, it seems I own a pair of big girl britches after all, and I have worn them two whole times: to get married to that bearded crazy I like so much, and to close on our first house!!

We've lived in this "hotel" of a house for less than a week, and have gone to great lengths to make it feel like our own. Obviously, it still doesn't feel real, or I wouldn't be calling it a hotel. I'm thinking I'll share the transformation, in its bitterness and it's glory. Before's and after's, gosh awful wrongs and very rights. The whole place has already been painted (only because we have incredible friends with the true heart of a servant), I have no shortage of DIY projects up my sleeve (even some building, insert collective ohhs and ahhs), intense gardens to maintain, and a handful of weddings. That last one has nothing to do with the house. Oops.

Personality Board #9

Why are they called "Personality Boards" and not just inspiration boards, like the others I've seen? Simply, because they're more personal. As much as the artist in me loves details and pretty things, I believe a wedding to be so much more. An honest reflection of your life and your love and what makes you happiest. Further, when I work with clients for their weddings and homes, I start out by casting a vision -- a result that is like a Personality Board on steroids.
Then on more steroids. They're big.

That said, here's another. Isn't it pretty?

REAL Radiant Studios Wedding: Kristin & Dustin

Radiant Studios wore a lot of hats in preparation for their day of awesome, taking on responsibility for invitations & programs, floral arrangements, coordination, decoration and tear-down, some photography, creating a website for guests to visit, wreaths and some other handmade projects.

The pictures don't even convey how much stinking fun my friends are.

And congratulations to you guys for being featured on the Budget Savvy Bride's blog! That's fantastic. So happy for you.

Incredibly chill, rolled with the punches, and are crazy about Marvel comics, for crying out loud. I love these guys.
